Blue Whale Watching

Sri Lanka is a popular destination to observe whales and dolphins. Dondra Point, located in southern Sri Lanka, is the main whale watching port in Sri Lanka from December to April. December, January, and April are the most significant months of these months.

During these months, there is a 95% chance of seeing sperm whales and large blue whale species, their flyway being close to Dondra Point. In addition, there is a good chance to see Spinner Dolphins also next to Dondra. Mirissa is the closest point to Dondra Point with good accommodation options.

Hiking and Trekking

Sri Lanka’s diversity of landscapes provide the opportunity for amazing treks and hikes especially in central highlands of the country. Trekking and hiking through the jungles, tea fields, and the mountains as well as the rivers and the many other waterfalls of Sri Lanka give a unique experience that can not match with anywhere in the world. Kandy offers many hikes. Hiking from Ihalakotte Station to Dodanwala DevaleShrine passes through forest reserves, Alagalla Mountain, tea plantations and traditional Kandyan villages. Hanthana Hike, Alagalla Mountain Trail, Bahirawakanda Hill, and Udawattakelle Forest Reserve are the most popular.

In Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains National Park offers excellent hiking in an unusual environment characterized by forested areas, meadows, and high altitude vegetation. In Ella, you can take two great hiking experiences. Ella Rock is a day hike from Ella town in the highlands, about 1000 meters above sea level. Little Adam’s Peak is another hike in Ella.,an easy day hike, the views from Little Adam’s Peak are amazing through rolling hills and tea plantation.

The hike to Adam’s Peak is more like a pilgrimage hike with 5,200 steps to more than 2,000 meters. It’s the most popular hike to watch the sunrise all around the world.
Hiking and trekking in the rock Pidurangala near Sigiriya, trekking in the hills of Ritigala and Mihintale are famous among the hikers while visiting the heritage sites of Anuradhapura, Mihintale, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, and Ritigala.

Jeep Safari

A wide range of national parks, nature reserves, and safari camps have been established throughout Sri Lanka, large areas of very diverse terrain ranging from Willpattu National Park in the North of the country Yala National Park in the south with plenty of others between. The best thing is there are safaris that you can select based on what you need to experience.

Yala national park is most famous and second largest wildlife park in Sri Lanka, where you can explore the jungle and witness some of the most beautiful animals like Sri Lankan Elephant Leopard, Sloth Bear, and Wild Water Buffalo during the 4-5 hour safari. The ideal hours to watch leopards in Yala are early in the morning from 6 am to 8 am and at the end of the day between 4 am and 6 am, usually in the sun on the rocks.

Udawalawe is the sixth largest wildlife sanctuary of Sri Lanka, where you can see large herds of elephants strolling around carefree in the park area during your 4-5 hour jeep safari. Water Buffalo, Wildboar, Spotted Deer, Sambur Deer, Jackal, Samber, Black-naped Hare, mongooses, bandicoots, foxes, the endemic Toque Macaque can be also seen during the safari in Udawalawe.

 

Minneriya jeep safari is one of the most popular activity among travelers where they can watch large herds of Sri Lankan elephants gather on the edges of the dry season. The 3-hour jeep safari is a valuable opportunity to observe unique and amazing wildlife in their natural habitats. May to October is the best period to visit Minneriya National Park. Wilpattu jeep safari offers you the Leopard, Elephant, Sloth bear, Deer, endemic birds can be sighted easily during a half day safari. Wilpattu National Park guiding animal safaris, visitors are always safe, even in the heart of the wilderness.

Kite Surfing

Go kitesurfing in Sri Lanka: run along the turquoise sea or swim through the waters of a tranquil lagoon, either in the popular town of Negombo or in the quieter Kalpitiya retreat. Sri Lanka has excellent kitesurfing sites for beginners, as well as places suitable for the more experienced. The best season for kite surfing on the northwest coast of Sri Lanka runs from May to December.

The Kalpitiya lagoon, sandbanks, isolated islets, reef, and ocean are ideal kitesurfing spots in Kalpitiya.

Mountain Biking

Cycling and mountain biking in Sri Lanka are a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Sri Lanka. The network of major roads and countless country roads, gravel roads, walking trails, cart tracks, dirt tracks, and dirt tracks make the four corners of the small island accessible to cycling enthusiasts. The terrain throughout the country offers challenges for beginners and experts.

The central highlands of Sri Lanka and its clean climate offer enormous opportunities for tourists wishing to cycle in Sri Lanka. The highlands of central Sri Lanka call for mountain biking. The seamless tea plantations are explored by tracks plowing the land that connects tea factories, villages and small towns.

You can also cycle through the cultural triangle, the usual starting point for cycling in Sri Lanka is Habarana. Through Kandalama, the World Heritage Sites of Dambulla and Sigiriya. Cycling could begin in Polonnaruwa to enjoy the scenery surrounding the Giritale Sanctuary and Wasgamuwa National Park.

Scuba Diving

In Sri Lanka, there are many scuba diving sites on the west, south and east coasts of the island. Hikkaduwa is recognized as one of the best places for diving on the Southwest coast as well asWeligama site allows you to see a variety of dolphins and sharks. Kirinda is on the southeastcoast, best known as a base from which to experience some fantabulous diving at the renowned‘Great Basses’ wreck and the Great and LittleBasses reefs.

On the west coast, Trincomalee offerssome great diving spots such as Swami rock, Irrakkakandi wreck and many dive sites around thePigeon Island Marine Park. Due to the monsoon seasons, west coast scuba diving is generally best from November to April and the east coasts are at their calmest April – September.

Surfing

Sri Lanka is a renowned surf destination for all levels of experience. There are waves to learn to stand on a surfboard and there are tubes on shallow waters with sea urchins that make the wave even more exciting – the surfers know what it really means! Sri Lanka is year-round and stands out as one of the most reliable surf destinations in the Indian Ocean.

Since the early 60’s this tiny magical island attracts surfers from all over the world. The best surf spots in Sri Lanka are located on the south and east coasts, Hikkaduwa and Arugam Bay are the most frequent, but there are many “hidden spots” like Unawatuna, Ahangama,  Weligama, Mirissa or Okanda where you can always find uncomplicated surf.

Although there is are two surf seasons, November-April in down south and May-October in the east coast, you can find a good session outside the seasons if you follow up with the locals.

White Water Rafting

The Rafting to Sri Lanka is one of the most popular and exciting sports among travelers in Sri Lanka. Wind Surfing

In Sri Lanka, the surrounding waters of the Indian Ocean are ideal for windsurfing and the monsoon weather is such that half of the island’s coastal waters are still in season for water sports. Bentota, on the west coast, is famous for windsurfing. The conditions of the sea and wind are optimal during the season from November to April. Negombo, in the north-west of the country, is also suitable for windsurfing in Sri Lanka, with its lagoons and inland lakes.

Windsurfers can also travel to Trincomalee on the east coast if they are in Sri Lanka between July and August. On the east coast, the best winds blow from July to August when the surfers head for Trincomalee in Nilaveli & Uppuveli.

Windsurfing in Sri Lanka is also possible inside the lagoons and lakes of Negombo, Bolgoda and Bentota.
